Our core aims

Pacesetters Learning Zone provides a quality out of hours learning provision to schools in Tower Hamlets. Using the National Playing for Success initiative we look to raise attainment levels in numeracy and literacy and ICT by using the medium of sports to key stage 2 and 3 pupils.

In addition to the out of hour’s school learning offer we partner up with schools, local charities and after school clubs to deliver enrichment projects. We work with pupils from key stage 3 & 4 pupils.

Our objective is to help young people in Tower Hamlets to achieve their potential. Pacesetters endeavour to continue to improve and create new innovative ways of learning.

Impact

There have been extensive studies on the framework of impact of the PfS programme. Previous national evaluation studies have measured pupil’s performance at the start and end of their attendance at PfS Centres (Sharp et al., 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003). The results have shown clear evidence of significant improvements, especially in numeracy and information and communications technology (ICT). This study set out to consider whether there was any evidence of longer term changes in pupils performance in National Curriculum Assessments (NCA) associated with attending a PfS Centre. We have also found that children’s attitudes to learning have improved once they have been on the programme. Many teachers have noticed a change in their confidence and motivation levels.

The programme is aimed at pupils who need an extra boost with their literacy & numeracy and who would respond well to the informal learning techniques. Children’s strengths and areas of development are identified early on and activities are chosen to address the children’s individual learning needs.

Overall is it a very positive learning experience for the vast majority of the children with 99% of attendees stating that they feel their numeracy & literacy have improved over the duration of the programme programme.
